| Alexandra has worked in all art forms. She now concentrates on painting, photography and glass sculpture. Her subject matter has been her own inner world, thoughts, feelings and observations of life. Her recent work is concerned with her feelings about her initial background - Greece and the mediterranean. Through painting and photography she explores the environment, its atmosphere and visual identity. |
| The 'blue' in question is used to evoke the sea and skies of the mediterranean at the height of summer - and Derby-based Alexandra Koufali's canvasses are awash with vibrant azure's and turbulent indigo's. Continuing in the vain of her earlier abstract, intuitive works, which share a deft use of colour and atmosphere, Koufali has harnessed her inner feelings in depictions of crashing waves and darkening clouds that seem seethe with a barely contained nervous energy. Koufali's deliberate attempt to capture mood and ambience rather than people and places lend the works a versatile ambiguity, leaving the viewer free to use their imagination - and possibly get them running to the nearest travel agent. by Amy Bell, Nottingham Journalist |
